Help to identify random loose connector.

Hi,
Over the last 8 month since we go our van I've been amazed that this forum has had everything I need to know in the wiki and forum, so thanks to all the contributors. This however has me stumped. After consulting the Haynes and the internet I'm non the wiser! So here is my first question.
Whilst doing a basic service and changing the plugs I found a loose 3 pin rubber plug lying in the grot on the top of the engine behind the alternator. It doesn't appear to be connected to the carb or the alternator. The wire disappears off under carb manifold. What is it? The van runs fine and all the instruments appear to work so I assume (hope!) it is either redundant or not essential. The van is a 1988 DG 1.9.
Pictures of mystery item below!
Many thanks in advance.
