Repair or replace starter motor?

Hi I’ve got a 1.6 air cooled ct engine, when you have finished laughing please read on.
So only just bought it and knew that the starter was likely on its way out. That does seem to be the case. It will click lots but eventually on about the fourth or fifth attempt at turning the key will make contact and spin as it should.

My question to you more experienced owners is do you think it makes more sense to get the older unit repaired rather than replacing? I’m guessing it’s probably the solonoid that needs repair or replacement. If the answer is repair can anyone suggest a company that will do it. I have tried a company called just alternators and starter motors but the poxy phone line seems to be down.

This is why I’m thinking of getting the original repaired as it’s a better quality, I assume anyway.
Just Kampers do them for £129 I think

My local repair shop charged me £25 to repair the Bosch.
He told me not to buy any other starter.
Bosch parts are plentyful and cheap.
Bosch starters are easily repaired.

Yup, and have been since Beetle days. I always repair them. Faults are usually very simple. Sounds like this one needs the commutator cleaning and new brushes (about £7) :D Might need a new solenoid (about £30).

First thing I'd do (with battery diseconnected) is check connections on starter. Take them off and clean threads - pay particular attention to spade connector as they are well known for becoming loose or even falling off.

Brushes. Different case but principle similar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJM2veUNBc0&t=312s" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; You can also desolder old brushes and solder in new ones.

If you don't want to have a go yourself, find a local place and get a quote. Shouldn't cost THAT much ;)
