Sliding Door Catch Cleaning

Hi people, i'm removing the sliding door catch to give it a good clean and spray with lithium 3 in 1 grease tomorrow.
My question is, is there a good solvent to soak it in? Or should i just give it a good clean with a rag before spraying it with lithium grease??
Past owner/garage has left it a bit gunky.
