Hi

Seen a few threads on stainless exhausts for a 1.9 or 2.1 petrol but wondered if anyone would recommend either a Speed Shop system or the Just Kampers system ?

Be interested to hear from anyone thats fitted either of these systems ?

Cheers
Jim

From what I have seen JK has steel flange plates welded to.stainless pipes
these rust and make the exhaust limited life
I would not buy one.

Speedshop by all accounts is better but out of stock when I looked yesterday

I have the VW Speed shop SS on my 1.9DG, been on about 6 years and still looking good. The only thing I have noticed is it is a bit louder than the standard one but in a nice way and the pipes run close to the cylinder heads just below the flanges but has not caused a problem so far. Not sure how much closer because I never measured the original standard one.

Where are you based? These guys in Cardiff did mine at a pretty good price. Speak to Charlie.

The JK one is complicated, a faff to fit, uses horrible cheapo U-clamps, mild steel flanges and it leaks at the joints. I believe it's now made in the far east as a copy of the JP system they used to sell, which is why it just got much cheaper.

A customer brought one in for me to fit. I showed him the Speedshop systems I had in stock, and he sent the JK one back for a refund.
This story is a little misleading though, as he didn't need a new exhaust after all. I just welded up the crack on his original one, and he used his £500 refund to pay for other more essential work needed. He's now saving for a Speedshop exhaust next year!

Did a good job on mine as well, though it did take him a while to free the studs off!

That's back when JP made them.

Does the smaller oil filter you have to use when fitting the speed shop one to a 2.1 make any difference? If not, then what is the point of the bigger one?

I suppose it's a matter of volume, so the smaller filter should really be changed more frequently.

So every oil change instead of every other.

Crumbs! Needing to replace my ungodly noisy water pump and fretting over a stripped cylinder head/exhaust stud I have removed the engine so as to fix the inevitable collateral thread damage when removing the exhaust to fit the Helicoil/s  . Although the exhaust is looking a bit rough it is intact and would probably go back on with new set of gaskets and a full stud count. I have however been sniffing around the availability of a stainless steel set up. I was a bit put off by the mild steel flange plates mentioned in connection with the JK SS job and had a look at what Speedshop are offering. While tempted by the slightly louder exhaust note of the Speedshop job (Have to change gear by the rev counter due to mild hearing deficiency and sullenly silent engine) I was unpleasantly surprised to learn about the requirement for a shorter oil filter. Not that i have anything against it per se but I run an aftermarket oil cooler sandwiched between the oil filter and the existing oil cooler on the crankcase. I guess this blows the Speedshop out for me then. Back to the drawing board then. :(
