Looks like the left hand brush is either stuck in or significantly more worn than the other. I don't know what the min length is but it looks like a new brush pack will solve your issue.
Hope so.

Have to catch the train next few days. Pain. Hope this will do it. Oh yeah need to get a battery charger. Cant find my poxy one

5mm is the minimum wear length. So it looks like it needs replacing anyway
Have got a picture of the end of the brushes? That will tell more if the brushes are worn out or sticking the end of the brush will be pitted not shiny.

Yes, the brush has worn out you can see the pitting where it has been arcing.
Unfortunately, the slip ring it rubs against is also worn, consider getting the alternator overhauled at some time in the future.

Yep a new regulator should keep you going.
They are not a VW specific part they fit loads of vehicles with Bosch alternators Most motor factors should be able to supply one, always handy to carry a spare.

The slip rings need the alternator stripping down and the rings machined if there is enough copper left or replaced.

Final question,

In the excitment of the morning, sorry if it sounds like a silly question, which way does the regulator go on... with brushings pionting towards coil or air filter??

The brushes point to the centre shaft of the alternator.
You have insert the new one with brushes at an angle so they touch the slip rings then push and twist against the spring pressure so it fits straight against the casing.

Right then guys.

Part came today... Put it in.

Im still getting the light, solid then faint, and flickering. I have a clock with voltmeter on it Im getting 12.5-6 ideling. Blower heater on it goes down to 11v. Checked conncections. Look OK, the blue one could do with replacing, but have no ring connectors, and its not in a bad way at all.

Do I need to get my alternator refurbed. Its a lucas 45a one.

Bloody hell

Can you get a photo of the slip rings - looks like they are shot

I don't think that you need a pic - to get that scoring so quick the slip rings are 99% certain to have had it.
