It won't start?

Hello,

My battery with the cold weather was dead so I charged the battery. The engine turns fine but it won't fire into life?

We are having very cold weather but it's normally a good starter, is there anything else that is an easy check?
Or any thoughts to what is wrong?

Thanks Lee

Sorry, I have an 84, 1.9dg engine.
It was fine last week and normally with a little charge and fuel is through it fires, but just keeps turning over but not catching.

Thanks lee

So you need to see if you have fuel and a spark.

Use a spare plug, or remove one if you have to, place in a plug lead, earth the plug to the engine and hold it in place with something that will insulate you from the spark. Then you need a helper to turn the engine over. You should see a spark across the plug.

If that's OK, replace the plug / lead, gain access to the throat of the carb and pour an eggcup of fuel into the top. Now try & start her. If it starts fuel was the problem

I guess if it's turning over then it couldn't be electrical?

Maybe it's flooded, going to put new fuel in as it's quite low and will clean the plugs,
Are they easily accessible?

Thank you.

Good place to start, I've had 2 T25's that have had a dodgy fuel sender, once the gauge reads in the white I re-fuel, as its very hit and miss to whats in there!

Worth noting that if you have run out of fuel, and you put some more in, these engines often have a slightly weak fuel pump and trying to pull the fuel through to the carb by cranking the engine, especially in this cold weather, can flatten your battery well before the fuel gets to the carb.

A trick I use is to connect a bit of hose to the carb fuel inlet and manually fill the carb with petrol from a plastic bottle. I have a large plastic syringe for this, but you could likely do it with a small funnel. When the engine then fires up, it quickly pumps the fuel up to where it should be, and all works from then on.

Ghost said it for me. Trust me, thats the most likely cause - dry carburettor.

My on going starting problem ( same symptoms as yours ) was the earth from the ECU to corroded body work..

Moved the earth and that solved it.

Hello,

Still won’t start, I have no fuel from the pump to carburettor?
Cannot check spark as I don’t have someone to turn the key.

Is there a fuel pump relay on an 84 t24 1900 dg engine?
Maybe the pump is on the way out as it cut out a fuel times last year?

Cleaned the plugs and removed carbon from dizzy...

Any thing else I can try, would there be any electrical parts that could fail to stop it from starting?
It’s turning over but not catching. Going to syringe some fuel in tomorrow.

Thanks

Do the test I suggested the other way round then, try the fuel solution first.

By the sounds of it you have a fuel issue, the fuel pump is mechanical on the DG vans unless someone has installed an electric one.

Have a read of this thread, http://forum.club8090.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=163475 , that was a success story.

That'll be a 2.2T then, before they started putting on weight
