Coolant temp issues

I've just read a few old posts and I think I understand - but here's a few symptoms; any thoughts very welcome:

- I have a small engine jacket leak - but that's a different thing
- Coolant gauge flashed this morning, and engine starts to overheat on the gauge - I assume accurate (??)
- I stop to get water - but expansion is well topped up. Carry on to destination as less than 2 miles.
- Open engine bay - header under minimum - follow advice on here once cool. Open header, start engine, pour in water, keep revving a bit, end up adding 2 litres.
- Drive home - fine.
- Drive 100 miles or more - fine
- Almost home - hot air in front of van suddenly goes cold, engine starts to heat up (assume - gauge goes up). 1 mile later, hot air back in cab, engine back to normal.

Could be more air locks, low water (will check header in morning), could be water pump - intermittent working? Could be Thermo - again intermittent fails?

(Exhaust fine, engine power fine. Needle just went up, never close to 3/4).

Many thanks,
Adrian

Replacing two litres would suggest a problem to me. Thorough bleed (rather than a top up) and dalek cap test would be top of my list. Any leak from the head seal would concern me simply because it is too easy to assume it is a a slight leak under all conditions. I have read of owners curing slight weeping with K seal but not something I have tried.

Thank you...

Went out today, header 1/2 full again, expansion dry. Released the dalek cap, small pressure released (air sound).... and then waterfall started from the jacket seal... looks like game over for a little while. I knew it would go one day - so typical of my bus to always make it home before letting go...
