Just a thought as I'm new to these engines but is the oil return from the rocker box clear? I was thinking about possible pressure build up forcing
oil down pass the guides.

Also did you measure the end gap on the rings or just inspect them??

Regards

M

There are four push rod tubes and a dirty great hole above tappet on each to drain to sump, unlikely blocked.

Hi Itchy, oilrag has some heads for sale on here so we are going to buy them, we put new rings on the pistons, just waiting to hear back from oilrag about his cylinder heads, thank Diabolov too,

Did you ever check valve play on your heads?
Most second hand heads have cracks between valves and worn guides so check what you bought is better than what you have.

My point is that you didn't report back if you had checked your valve guides for play and if you didn't you may be buying heads no better than what you have or in other words that won't fix your problem, broken exhaust studs is another area of pain.

Well, the ad says "AMC Cylinder heads, usable condition, guides ok, seats ok, no visible cracks," so it implies they've been checked.

Just reread your post, Paul, and realised I misunderstood which heads you are referring to! As you were ;-)
