That is what bolt grips are for!

For the £20 odd they cost they've never failed to lock onto a rounded nut! I took a 32 yr old Landy to the chassis and on the odd occasion a decent 6 sided socket couldn't hold, the bolt-grips did it every time!

My only gripe with Halfords sets are that they are almost always 12 sided above 13mm.... useful in some situations but Less than ideal on seized nuts.

mmm

thats a good point.

I was thinking of getting the 200 piece kit, but will I use all the bits?? Or maybe stick with the 90 piece. or even 150 piece set?

Tough call

Agreed. Six-sided sockets are generally better at getting tricky nuts undone.

Not sure where to put this one??

Any advise on which socket set to get. Had a look at the wiki, and seems to suggest Halford Pro.. Problem is I havent got the bucks at the mo.

Is there a decent set for around £50

Need a set that goes upto 30mm ideally. Brake Caliper bolts etc

At the mo for the bigger sizes, I have had to go and borrow stuff off a kind bike shop owner.. Though I reckon Im starting to annoy him

I have a Halford 1/2" set which has been great, but 12point sockets which I'm not too keen on. I also have a Bahco 3/8" and also a Bahco 1/4" socket set, hex sockets. They really are fantastic sets, the 3/8" would be my pick if I had to keep jsut one socket set, Bahco are really nice put together pieces of kit.

Good call... the Bahco Set 138 is 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" in a massive all metric set for £150. I'd rather not have plastic covered handles on the ratchets but other than that it is pretty good. And from a very reliable (snap-on is the parent company) brand.

The 1/4 fits easily in the glove box. I have cracked a 15 socket and Bahco were a bit reluctant to replace though

Halfords have recently made their warranty even better on the Pro range; it is an absolute no questions asked like for like replacement policy now, even on moving parts (things like ratchet mechanisms) this cover is better that Snapon or Mac.
