Attaching outer sill piece with sliding door channel

Hello

My outer sill arrived today from schofields. Just wondered, do you cut the flange off the top of the sill piece and then butt weld it on at the edge of where the lower sliding door roller runs? Just wondered as if I leave it as it is it would involve making a butt weld on the exact point where the lower sliding door roller runs. As well as that being in an awkward position, I don't trust my butt welding is neat enough for the roller to run over the top of it. I know the bottom is just puddle welded to the inner sill.
Does that make sense? Does to me :ok

Did you buy the genuine vw full panel?

I've bought that panel and I'm planning to take the whole lot apart as I need to repair the inner sill too. The plate that cover the door roller channel looks like it's only spot welded to the sill and and at each end, most in theory it should be straightforward to drill out and gain full access to he working area

I would think either panel will be easier if you take the top panel out

Take the top panel out ? Are you saying the thick floor plate should be removed to work on the lower parts of the outer sill .

Hi Mick.

Have already cut the outer sill off but luckily did it as you said. Inner sill has some surface rust inside and one small area to patch but in pretty good shape. Will treat all that inside first then butt weld the top like you said and puddle weld the bottom. One of the easier bodywork jobs I have done so far and will look nice having an outer sill that's new rather than the crusty hammerited over bodge that the previous owner had done :ok

Note that there is an exra layer of metal at either end of the inner sill so you need to slightly swage the lower lip of your outer to get a straight flat edge

Plasticman, I take it there's a warning to go with removing the top plate? I've got my whole inner and outer to change because the runner area and inner sill are pretty badly holed, any advice?
I have the full inner sill from ah schofield and a genuine outer with door guide from BW
