Also worth noting that until ignition light actually goes out, alternator will produce zilch. I mention this for anyone else reading this thread as even my alternator is a little on the lazy side and I always have to blip the throttle to extinguish it every time I start up. Its been like that many years. Likewise, if ignition light comes in whilst driving you should ALWAYS stop since something like a snapped belt will not only bring alternator to a halt (and light ignition LED) but crucially, water pump will also stop, bringing on rapid overheating and possibly serious damage to the engine. That ignition light is about the only hint you get.

You might also want to consider fitting a bigger battery at some point, a 45ah battery is the kind of thing you see fitted to a 1 litre Polo.
The Standard battery is a Type 065/075 (around 60ah) a good upgrade would be a UK Type 100, these tend to be over 70ah.
The CCA (cold cranking amps) of a battery is probably even more important as it represents the 'sheer muscle' potential to start an engine, again yours is very low.

Type 063 45Ah is what they came out of the factory with, the CCA is perfectly adequate for turning over an engine with a 7.4:1 compression ratio.
