Had problem on sunday everything running fine turned engine off would not restart ! So jump started it and got home all ok on way home noticed the temp and fuel gauge not working
Had a quick look noticed aux/fan belt was very loose so thought maybe not recharging properly so replaced that still not holding charge and gauges not working.
After looking at the alternator noticed there is a thin blue wire not connected to anything looks corroded. It is attached to a bigger blue wire which leads off to a black box at the back of engine bay. Am i right in thinking this just needs a clean and re connecting to the alternator or does it sound like may be a bigger problem ! Dont want to take it to a garage for just a loose wire cashflow a little low after paying for van,ins etc etc Just in case it helps its a T25, 1.6 td , bosch 65a alternator and the blue wire connects at the bottom rear of alternator.

Many thanks for any help or advice !

It would be, as its the exciter wire for the alternator. Without it, the voltage regulator won't work and alternator will produce zilch. Sorry only just replied but at least you've sorted it. The battery light in your clocks (ignition light) also vital as it operates as a resistor (or load) for the exciter wire.
