Thanks for all the replys people. The information you have provided is excellent, really appreciate it.

I think the 1Y or AAZ upgrade will be something i'll seriously consider. Is there much noticeable performance difference between the 2? Since the AAZ is a TD. Also, can i keep my original 5 speed gearbox if i upgrade to 1 of the above engines?

Is it worth me getting the 1.7 KY serviced/upgraded and running it into the ground before swapping? Drives nicely on the flat, it would just be nice to have some extra power and get into 2nd gear on hills (15mph in 1st is a bit to low for me). Are there ways to boost power on a 1.7 KY?

Cheers.

Forget about the 1.7, just bin it. Your gearbox may be a bit low geared for a higher power engine .

15mph in first? Just how steep is this hill? Sounds like one or more things wrong here:
Tappets have never been set
Pump timing wrong
Throttle cable incorrectly adjusted
Fuel screw wound in to stop smoke
Air filter/inlet blocked
Gummed up injector nozzles
Or it's just worn out!

The Hill was by Porth Beach in Newquay. It was quite steep and bendy to be fair.

It was fine on the motorway at 65, so i'm tempted to get the engine serviced/finely tuned and see how it is?
But don't know weather it would be a better idea to save up and get the engine swapped to a 1.9?

ajsimmo - Do you think my current 5 speed gearbox would work well with a 1.9 engine? No idea what code it is.

Cheers.

Yes, it'll be fine. It will still sit happily at 65 at the same revs, but you won't have to change down at the first hint of an incline!

I swapped my 1.6cs for a 1.9aef.
Massive difference on hills. I can go up most hills in top gear. Went up a mountain last weekend and if I still had the cs I would have had to be in first gear for a lot of it. In the 1.9 I did it in 3rd.

Or if you want to go up a hill faster/in that London, go GTi. Ask Elvis...

Cheers people.

If i upgraded the engine, do you think a 1.9 Camper would be good for a daily drive?

I have a car and camper currently , but my partner isn't happy  Plus i don't think I could afford both in the long run?

Not sure i'd go for a GTi  A 1.9 (TD??) sounds good :D

How much would the campershack charge for a 1.9 conversion ajsimmo ??

I'm sure a 1.9tdi with a suitable gearbox would be better than a 1.9 na but you'd need deeper pockets to pay to get a tdi installed properly with a suitably geared gearbox.

Thanks for the info boatbuilder.

TDi sounds tempting, but i think i'm leaning more towards aef, 1y or maybe aaz?

They seem like less work with pretty good results? Plus, if i get a non turbo engine, there is less to go wrong again

Still open to suggestions though.

Cheers.

An AEF or 1y are the easiest swaps. Pretty much bolt on and bolt off. A bit of fettling required with the AEF but nothing terrible.
It would be nice to be able to drive at 65 but at lower revs though.

What are the revs at when driving at 65?

Ideally would like a to cruise at 70 if possible? Could probably live with 65 though.

I think the 1Y has a bit more bhp, but i'm told that's not as important as torque! Anyone know if the difference between 1Y and AEF is noticeable?

Cheers.

you won't notice the difference between AEF and 1Y

don't go for a turbo motor and learn to love 65mph.

IMHO of course..
