Slightly embarrassed that I have to ask!! But how do I fill the onboard water tank in my Autohomes Komet? I know the where it goes in but how is the question? I've never had one with a water tank before and google came up blank. I've owned a caravan before but that had an electric pump and 2 connections to the van!! Thanks in advance

In my van you remove a cap and fill with a hose pipe or a funnel and a water container.

I fill my Westy with a hose. I brought one of those expandable blue hoses that I keep in the van just for fresh water - rather than using the garden hose

Heard of some making up hoses using food grade (blue) hose pipe but I always fill up with a funnel and water carrier via the water inlet on the outside of the van. I'd recommend using a large funnel with a flexible neck because of the angle, I've found this works a lot better.

Ideally you fill when you get to a campsite, the water tank when full is heavy and carring around lots of weight costs fuel and slows your van down.

A couple of things I've learnt in the last 25 years of camper ownership concerning on board water tanks ......

1. Never fill a tank until you have run water from the tap you are filling from into a clean drinking glass - look through it, taste it , because it's much much easier not to fill with bad water than to have to clean it all out !
2. Only fill using your own filling hose , never ever use a hose that is already attached to the tap ( this is mostly for campsites this rule) you never know who use it for what before ! I witnessed a bloke washing his bog out with the drinking water tap , that has an attached hose , and he put it right in the bog as well!
3. Never use baby sterilising fluid or tablets to clean the water tank out , it is not designed for the job and will damage anything metal , like pump impellers and taps . Use Puriclean , it designed for the job and it's cheaper !

On my van it's in the most stupid of places inside! It's in the kick panel under the rear seat/rock n roll bed.

I have learnt that filling up with a hose pipe is pretty much a sure way to soak the carpet as by the time you hear the water coming up the filler it's overflowing!

Many years ago I spent much time trying to get a strange taste/smell out of my water tank only to work out that it came from the water remaining in the coiled hose pipe hanging on the wall of the garage in the sun.
The taste/smell was chemicals leaching out of the plastic hose.
So now I run it for a while before filling the tank.

I have one of these systems fitted. It's like drinking spring water from your water tank!

I used a food-grade flat-hose, which packs down small and I can stow and take with me. Always run the water for a little while to ensure that any standing water that's been in the hose is flushed out. I also use Puriclean for full cleaning/flushing of the tank, and I also have some Midi-Tabs (also from the makers of PuriClean) for dropping into the water when I fill up (ensures that the standing water is drinkable, as tanked water can go funky pretty quickly).

Very good point mr Smith.
We run all the hoses at work for 10 mins every week to flush them, mainly because of legionella that breeds like crazy in water lying in hoses in the sun.
I always thought it was overkill for work hoses that aren't for drinking water but when filling your tank it's well worth it.

I got mine from the 12v Shop for £109! ok a few years ago now.
