Neutral position switch tells the ecu when the car isn't in gear , it can have all sorts of side effects when it happens in a Standard Subaru stalling being the main one aswell and joining wires never solves it as then it would be permently in neutral if it works at all ,, the speed sensor should sort this problem out in a vw conversion as far as I am aware , I'd check and see if it's either faulty or not connected up right
