Hello .I have a 1984 Devon moonraker running a set of 14" steel wheels with the standard Avon van tyres and seem to be getting a lot of Road noise (booming )and a hard ride.
Is there any recommendations on types of tyre or different wheels that give you a more comfortable and quiet ride.

"Booming"?

What load rating are the tyres? Wheel bearing rumble? What springs/dampers fitted?

How old are your tyres? They can be noisier when older, as the rubber "hardens" with age. I put a set of new Rainmax2 on my wife's van and it was a vast improvement in noise level (and grip, handling, comfort and feel)

To know this, you must have caned your wife's van to notice the improvements - who'd do such a thing???

How much experience have you in these old vans? You're not comparing it to a more modern drive are you? Mine is very quiet compared to some vans I've been in but it's nowhere near The sound levels as our family car (2016 Honda).

Fair enough, may be expecting a little to much lol, would alloys make any difference ?

Some tyres will be quieter than others. I had some conti tyres that were quite quiet.

You can reduce the internal noise with bitumen pads and sound proofing.

Road noise
Rode noise is something quite different, more of a high pitched noise in my experience

My internal noise wouldn't be silenced by any type of pad. The voices get through anything

Re your rolling road 'ambient VW campervan life sountrack'...

I have just replaced my badly cracked but still 6mm deep Michelin 185R14C radials from [er 1995 evidently ..] on my van after a big restoration with basic 'Goodride' SC301 8 ply van rated radials at a local tyre fitters [£200 fitted]. Having just spent £700 on a clutch for my wife's Fiat Multipla 'frog car' my budget drastically reduced and I had to find a set of cheaper tyres than planned. I am really happy with the look and ride height increase with the change to 205R14 choice on my freshly powder coated black steel wheels. I trialled a borrowed 205/14 on my second spare sixth steel wheel and it fitted fine with no issues on full lock. The wheel arches are fuller and having gone back to heavy duty shocks and standard height springs from lowered [never again .. not in bumpy Norfolk anyway] the ride is loads better and MUCH quieter. Two observations: the hardness of the old tyre was notable and the van just looks happier on its new boots. Secondly having replaced the fornt wheels bearings that made a big difference too.

My van is a pocket money project [according to SWMBO] and I have done little jobs over six years as cash allowed. I have rebuilt the brakes and even changing the discs and servicing the calipers makes a difference on top of regular servicing [fluids and engine consumables etc] .. SO YES change your tyres, budget ones are fine for moderate mileage users like me. Brickwerks and 80-90 helped me choose the safe option of going upwards a bit in height and outwards in width for more grip on wet campsites and beaches. Also I wanted to drop my long distance driving revs a little. I haven't bothered with alloys, as I like steels on this vehicle. Sorry I can't add a photo yet but if I can work it out I will..
