2.1 DJ WBX push rod tube protectors - photos needed please

Post by Winchweight »

Could someone do me a favour and take a photo of both the pushrod protection plates installed on their engine. Mine were removed during an exhaust repair and not refitted as they needed some tlc, but I never noticed them when they were fitted and can't remember how they go back on. Thank you in advance.

Also, were these engines handed i.e. left hand drive and right hand drive? I have the old tinware that surrounds the engine but it was ropey, so I bought a good second hand set. However, they are orientated the opposite way around! Why would they be handed?

Hi sean
They the push rod protectors should have tabs on then that locate on the lower exhaust studs. There are also tapping on the case along the bottom of the block.
Are you also asking about the tinwhere splash gards for a wbx. There are 3 secions of this that conects to the chassis rails and the exhaust heat sheeld. The heat sheeld being one of the 3.

Thanks Neil, yes the splash guards. The heat shield is fitted, but I have two sets of splash guards (one good and one naff), but they are opposites.... Wondered why? Is one for a 2.1 and one for a 1.9? Are they different?

Perfect Kev, thank you. That's a very tidy engine.... Sadly mine isn't, having suffered four years in long grass. ☹️

Syncro splash guards are a different shape to 2wd type. Syncro ones are deeper, 1.9 or 2.1 the same.
In either case, the left is quite different to the right.

They are also, to a large extent, a hang-on from the Aircooled design when air from the fan was directed around the fins of the cylinder head - for those less familiar with the original VW engine design. They do tend to rust out which is why I always made my own from sheet ally. For many years I drove around in a double-crewcab to which I'd fitted a bored out Aircooled engine. Despite it seeming a backwards step, it meant I had a good choice of cams and I ended up with a superb hill climber as well as easy (and cheap) availability of parts as the bug market always was well catered for. All the tinware between engine and bodywork I also cut from sheet ally making a very tidy installation. Fabrication was something I learnt very early on but the advantage of ally is its easy to cut and bend into any shape. Pushrod covers are the easiest of all.

Very informative thanks guys. I see BW and CVC do their own versions of the protectors, but they are bloomin expensive!

I have tidied mine up and painted them and they look fine, just need to refit them now.
