pushrod tube seals

hi.
forgive me if there is a simple answer to this but..
I had an oil leak from a pushrod tube oil seal at the block end on my CU engine. I have replaced the oil seal but damaged it so badly when trying to fit it it is still leaks.
yes i took the rocker cover off, removed the rockers, removed the clip, pulled the tube, fitted new seals....all I had to do was slide it back in... is there a trick to this??
