testing for air leaks

Hi all,
I've had this intermittent problem with my van juddering and sometimes cutting out. Often it will make a loud pop when I turn the ignition off. From some reading in the forum, sounds like it could be an air leak or mixture problem.
I had thought I had solved it, the dizzy was loose so I tightened it up by hand. It seemed ok a did a large run without issue (100 miles). I recently got the timing reset by garage when she went in for her MOT. But the above is back with a vengance now - and I cut out on the middle of a roundabout!
Anyway , enough waffling. Please could someone knowledgable advise the best way to test for air leaks? I've got a feeling I need to spray carb cleaner around the pipes and listen for engine noise changing?
