Hi Dave,
So you build a new engine. How manny horses do you want?
Post some pictures from the new engine.
Do you realy think that the vidration is comming from rotten CV / driveshafts?
Or from a rotten gearbox
Because de vibration is in every gear around the same rpm's.
I unstall the gearbox. A mounthing place is broken and there is a lot of space on the flanes of the gearbox.
The cheapest way is to buy another gearbox.

I wasn't rebuilding for more horses, just because the old engine was 300,000 miles old and was severely worn.
Turns out my excessive vibration WAS a knackered driveshaft! I replaced the LHS shaft with a used-good unit and immediately the vibration has almost ceased entirely. I believe the vibration is due to the torque the engine is putting out at those engine speeds, rather than the road speed.
The van is SO much quieter to drive now and less things fall off as I am driving along
Unfortunately today it has developed a clutch problem so I now have to address that too
Dave.

Heres a picture of the ASZ engine on the table, mid rebuild. It's the bottom of a PD engine (ASZ) with a Non-PD head (AHU). Basically what I had laying about in the junk pile.
Now in the car and running ok
Dave.
