Webasto thermotopc plumbing?

Guys,
A quick question for those in the know,
I have a small calorifier that was teed off and onto the heater circuit which provided hot water, I have recently added a thermotopc the one with a circulation pump and it worked fine.
To simplify the plumbing I removed the tees and made the thermotop and the calorifier a straight part of the flow from the head.
Unfortunately I'm now struggling to get any heat to the heaters with the engine running.
The question is, is the thermotopc suitable for in line running ie will the pump impeller turn with the engine flow and I have just got an air lock I haven't bled properly or must it be fitted teed off as part of a loop.
