alloys advice please

Post by hally75 »

Hi all

I am considering putting some alloys on the van. (westy joker pop top) They were bought with the van but supplied separate without tyres and in need of refurb etc.
My van is currently on standard 14" steels (with 185 x75 x14 tyres)
so i am concerned about the difference in wheel size and gearing being altered etc.
The alloys are compomotive 6j x 15 x 23-38mm NEG (this is what is stamped on the alloy) source of the alloys unknown! so my first question is, will they be heavy duty enough?? (how can i check this)
The centre hub of the alloys are 65mm, 5 stud, so presuming they will be strong enough for the van, what size tyre will i need to ensure i don't affect the gear ratios etc!

I believe i will need spacers and longer studs also?

any advice will be greatly appreciated as i don't want to get them refurbed if they're not going to fit!

cheers

The tyres you have at the moment are the wrong size anyway...they're too small.

You will need 195/70/15C's for the Compomotive alloys and that's only if they are strong enough for a van?
More info, including a photo,is required before saying yes or no...namely:

The exact ET(offset) to know if spacers are required?
Are they definitely 5X112PCD?
Any part numbers on the alloys?
Longer rear studs and front bolts will more than likely be required but without ALL the info it's pure guess work.

Hi Steve

thanks for your advice. unfortunately no other part numbes on the alloys.
i'll find out more some info on the ET and the PCD and get some photo's.

i see your in Barnsley, are metalmagic any good for refurbs? (i'm in Chapeltown, Sheffield)

like you say though, this is all IF they are strong enough.

I've never actually used MetalMagic myself but they do seem to get good reviews.

And if the centre holes are 65mm, these will need opening out to 66mm to clear the bearing grease caps

looks like 65 is enough David unless you have further information?

wiki wrote:Bolt/Stud Pattern

The Bolt/Stud pattern or Pitch Circle Diameter (PCD) is the diameter, spacing and number of the wheel studs or bolts. The T25 standard PCD is 5x112 meaning five (5) Wheel Studs or Wheel Bolts equally spaced in a circle whose diameter is 112mm.

wiki wrote:Wheel Offset

The Wheel Offset is the measurement in millimeters from the widthwise centre-line of the wheel to the mating-face of the wheel with the hub

if you can't find the ET this will be a rough guide

thanks all for the feedback.

i will try the alloy on the van this weekend, that will at least confirm if the PCD is correct and if the hub centre is big enough!
however, to determine if the alloys are strong enough for the van....not really sure how to confirm that!!

To be honest, unless the wheels have sentimental value to you...which I doubt seeing as they were bought with the van...I'd say sell them on and buy something more suitable.

The reason I say that is because even if...that's a big if by the way...that they are suitable,by the time you've had them refurbed(£120+),fitted new decent tyres(£200+),bought longer rear studs, front bolts, spacers etc it just doesn't make sense when there's plenty of alloys out there that fit and for less outlay.

After all that I've just said above ^^^^ I'd go as far as risking a couple of quid on those wheels actually being 5X114.3PCD(Rover SD1?)so no use whatsoever to you.

Your absolutely right Steve, no sentimental value at all! Think I will stick with the steels for now.
However, you mentioned my current tyres are too small ....what do you recommend?

Kev, great pic... That's exactly what they are I reckon!
Thanks for the info/feedback lads.... Thats what the forum is all about! :ok

Rich I have contacted Compomotive and the guys there say it looks to be a CX1560 that was made in the late 1980's
They want to know the letter stamped on the mounting face, then they can tell you what car they were made to fit
I have also asked for the other info..
With it you'll be able to sell them easier.
