will the M+S be good for MOT etc?

With regard to the C

In the manual, it says winter tyres for 2wd should be 185 r14 C.

Now, because it says it in the manual, insurance companies that are reluctant to pay out, may see the non-appearance of the C as a reason for not splashing the cash.

Just saying.

When I soke to a tyre place they said only put c tyres on if it says it in the literature.

Not tested this ever, as I always run commercial tyres...even the road ones, cos I don't know or understand enough not to.

C means they're built for commercial vehicles. Stuff like a VW Transporter... If they're not C rated, they probably aren't rated for the right load, and may well fail prematurely.

M+S means "Mud & Snow". It doesn't mean winter tyres. All it means is that there's a certain amount of space between the blocks of rubber. Proper winter tyres have a different symbol - a snowflake in front of a mountain - and are a completely different rubber.

Most pikey cheapo tyres are M+S rated.

they are also very soft... running on tarmac will wear them out in short order, because they'll get very hot without any mud or snow to cool them... like wet weather tyres in F1..no water...boom!

I think you're getting confused with proper winter tyres, Kev, which will wear quickly - the changeover point for them tends to be about 5degC.

The M+S rated Matador (Slovakian) tyres we fitted in Sarran last summer are still going strong (although getting fairly second-hand), with probably 25k miles on 'em now - and very little of that's been nice straight easy miles. PLENTY of heavily loaded hairpin bends, though, and PLENTY of very hot weather - 30deg+, including a chunk of 40deg+.

I honestly don't think I've seen a "commercial" pattern tyre that wasn't marked M+S.

They're crap in the snow by the way ;)
