ok .. planning on fitting my AFN sharan motor this weekend .. but just found out i have a dual mass flywheel ...

can i carry on and use that for now ? (even if people dont rate them etc ) .. will it work all ok for now ? i have a TDI input shaft for my gearbox.

I'd say buy a single golf flywheel and clutch. Save yourself the trouble.

I've not done one yet but the DMF should fit and work, you'll need the flat poo-plate, tdi starter and adapter plate. They seem to have gained a bad reputation but are now used on many new cars so they can't be all bad. I'm toying with the idea of trying one to see if they're smoother at low revs.

Actually most new cars are fitted with SMF now as DMF dont meet the demands, if you ring Peugeot for a clutch and dmf they will send you a solid one, they wont supply a DMF and they dont fit them in the factory anymore

Ive replaced about 20 in the last 3 months (no joke) i wouldnt want one on the bus, got one in my Golf but due to the box i cant use a SMF because it could damage the box or snap the crank

OK, all good info. My experience is limited, but my take was that DMF's had taken over with these modern very high-torque TDI's to soften the load on the gearbox a bit. With a powerful TDI and a T3 box (not the strongest) the DMF might still be useful ?

well its to late , and i have no money to replace it at short notice ..

so its just going in this weekend ! and we shall see how it runs ...

as i said ..not a big job in future to change ... (although dieing on a holiday is a bummer ! LOL )

sorry ive re read what i wrote and it sounds bad the DMF as you said makes for smooth power, this is due to the amount it can absorb, a SMF and centre plate iirc has 28 degrees of movement a DMF and solid clutch plate has 230 (its been a very long time since i learned the figures) so the dmf takes alot of sting from the engine, but by using the dmf they have totally changed the way and strength of the gearbox aswell as adding things like freewheeling Alt pulleys and dampened outer crank pulleys, tbh on a 25 the dmf will be find (and its only a couple hours to change it if needed) the thing with dmfs that get me is only today i have changed a dmf and clutch kit on a skoda octavia, clutch was perfect only changed because on start up there was a knock from the flywheel

the Dmfs were introduced to protect transmissions rather than for comfort reasons...new common rail engies dont hammer the drivetrains as badly so the dmf is bieng omitted...Skoda did decide it was ok to replace the dmf with a solid flywheel on the ALH engined cars...but that was a distributor pump engine not a PD and was used in other cars without a dmf allready.


In theory, the dmf is a good thing to have, protects the drive train,...but its expensive when it fails and it most likely will fail sooner if its used hard,

The sharan gearbox is very different to the golf one...not sure if the flywheel is compatible at all...maybe worth doing some more research.

thats more worring , as that will stop me dead this weekend if it dont fit !

i have a TDI inputshaft at hand .. so i can prove that fits..

but i assume i wont know untill i bolt bell housing up ?

DOH !! just tired my TDI input shaft and it wobbles around in the DMF !!!

so i have untill friday to find a clutch and flywheel for my setup.

options more than welcome / links / part no's otherwise its not happening

Huh/ do you mean its loose on the splines on the clutch? it will wobble in the end of the crank ifthere is no bearing fitted...im not even sure if the starter ring gear is the same on the sharan flywleel..or even on the correct side...but yes the splines in the clutch could be different as well, also the shazza had a hydro bearing and they are quite big..
