Cheers bigherb I think the i have found the problem. It is either the dieseling valve or more likely the carb body under neath and slightly to the right of the valve. Saw a drip of petrol and had a feel around and wet with fuel.
Great pics bigherb. Stood at the back of the van googling what that valve was but now I know. Carbs are solex 33-34

Seems to be leaking from the rear right corner of the left carb

Once found the screws holding the mounting flange to the base of carb loose. They're only accessible with the carb off of the inlet manifold.

Is the top of the carb screwed down tightly?
The engine has three carbs two main carbs and a third for idling only.

This part of the left carb is the third carb for idling, any air leak around there will cause problems.

Just tightened them as much as I can. Revved the engine again and wet again. Going to see if I can get the dieseling valve tighter but access a bit tight

Definitely from carb. Tightened valve and revved engine. Dry where valve screws in but wet again on corner of carb.
Should there be a gasket between the carb bodies?

I think I'm getting to the end of my capability with this one.
Solex carbs are a bit of a dark art to me. One carb is bad enough. Problem is don't know what she's going to do with the van now. Don't know anyone locally with the knowledge to sort them out.

Yes. This is the right carb but you get the idea. If you disconnect the throttle return spring you can unscrew the top and lift it enough to have a peekaboo.

Cheers bigherb and thanks for the help and pics.
Can see the gasket. Dosent seem to be on very well about 1mm showing on the front right side and invisible on rear right corner. Wouldn't think it had one if you just looked at that corner.

Go on man up and whip yer top off. :D

It is easy just undo the top screws, tap the side of the top of the carb with your screwdriver handle to break the gasket seal then you can lift it up.

I'm trying to help her not scare her!
I've said if she can get the van home and on her drive, I'll have a go at fitting new gaskets, at least then she can get it to a specialist.

Isn't she in the AA/RAC?

She said she has but didn't know what kind of policy it was.
She dosent live very far from where the van is parked, I'm sure someone in her family can give her a tow.

If it ran with the chokes on, try disconnecting the wires to the auto chokes so they don't go off and it over fuels, it might be enough to get her home if it is not far.
