The original ignition system would have been the ideal solution just needed someone who can diagnose which part was faulty rather than just replace the whole lot.
Without knowing what the original fault was it is hard to say which is the most cost effective way now. But get it running properly as it is now will be the easiest just not the best.

Next load of photos of left side of carb. Is that fuel filter in the engine bay going to blow us up?!!

Try taking a photo actually looking at the the left side of the carb so I can see it full on.

The filter is not ideal there, it is not doing what it needs to and just adds more connections that are under pressure.
It should be mounted under the vehicle behind the fuel tank

These vac pipes are the wrong way round swap them over.

Replace the manky rubber vacuum hose with some 3mm silicone hose to stop any air leaks.
