After a month or so I had the loud tapping, so thought adjustement was needed. Opened up the cover and two of them did this.. although not as bad. They don't seem to be very good metal compared to OEM ones.
I suppose I could have done something dumb but I trippled checked everything with valve adjustments.
This is freaky!
Me too, Steve. New 10mm adjusters from Brickwerks for my rebuild. Double checked and checked adjustment again at full turn and a quarter for initial run in. 1500 miles in and the very same issue. Started engine after a run 60 miles from home (trip to Dungeness) and engine clacking like a wounded duck.
Isolated issue to cylinders one and two. Yet three and four absolutely fine. So may be my fault.
Changed over for some original good un's, changed oil and filter, and all good after 3.5k.........hopefully. We did a 180 miles round trip last Sunday. The engine is running a dream.
The new adjusters after just 1500 miles.

They look like they haven't been heat treated (hardened) correctly, or, if they're case hardened as well then not deep enough?

I'm glad it wasn't just me then. Clearly something not right with them, maybe a duff batch..

Re: Cooling system - overheating
Had this a while ago when I built my current engine, bought new, can't remember where from now, they weren't this bad but replaced them with the original 10mm screws having ground some slight burrs off, been ok for the last 20,000 miles. Where is the crossed fingers emoji?

Re: Cooling system - overheating
Thanks guys for your chat and stories. Sorry, missed these - had a few bereavements during the winter...
My engine is being rebuilt as we speak, and hopefully will be back on the road by end of Feb. Had the camper for 18 years, and it has never been off the road for more than a couple of weeks. Completely shafted by the vwenginecompany during past two years. Three faulty engines and £9k out of pocket. Their best advice was that I don't need to check for damage or clean engine out after the valve adjusters shattered. All those pieces of metal in the oil.... or have I missed something?

Those bits of metal from the adjusters should just sit in the rocker covers, or possibly in the pushrod tubes. I doubt they'd find the way into the engine.

Re: Cooling system - overheating
Every mechanic I have spoken to said I needed to have the engine checked - and this is not so they get some work. In addition, after three faulty engines I would need re-assurance that the whole engine is in good condition and nothing likely to go wrong again. Unfortunately "doubting they will find the way into the engine" is not scientific enough for me after my experiences.

Re: Cooling system - overheating
After my nightmare with the vwenginecompany I had my van shipped to t2five in Leicestershire. He stripped it and found the piston rings were aligned incorrectly and lashings of sealant had been used on the engine. It's run beautifully since.
