Tailgate gas struts with a Bike rack

Post by keynsham1 »

I have standard gas struts on my tailgate. they are not very old but struggle to hold the tailgate up and totally fail when the bike rack is fitted (without bikes of course!) Does anyone know what the 'N' force rating the standard struts are? I want to buy some stronger ones, but I need a starting point!!

Watch out, though. Once fitted, the hatch will take your teeth out if you are not prepared.

A bargain at that price.

Wise words Stu. They took me by surprise when I first fitted them.

Between getting my tailgate down and steering the thing I'm surprised I don't have arms like a body builder.

A trick I heard about was a length of copper tube the length of the exposed piston when the tailgate is up, and a diameter to slip over the outer section. Lift tailgate up, slip tube over piston and against head of the outer section.
