Air cooled engine bay seal
Hi there
Just looking at the photo of the engine bay on the van I’m going to get - noticed that the engine bay seal appears to be missing.
Firstly is it safe to drive ? Isn’t going to catastrophically overheat when I drive it home?
Secondly, if I buy a replacement- seals direct or somewhere is it just a case of pushing it on I.e easy fix (thinking I’ll buy one and put it on before a drive home if need be)
I’m an air cooled newbie last t25 was water cooled so this all new to me thanks all

The seal needs to be glued on with contact adhesive. I don't think driving it home will make it overheat.

Re: Air cooled engine bay seal
Are you talking about the engine tinware to body seal or the engine lid seal ?

The tin to body seal to creat the heat barrier

I assumed you meant the engine hatch seal. Always best to describe exactly what you mean to avoid confusion. And a picture always helps.

Re: Air cooled engine bay seal
I wondered how to add a picture
No sign of the seal - I’m going up there tomorrow so I’ll check if it’s been put on since the picture was taken - should I avoid driving until I put one on

Re: Air cooled engine bay seal
In this cold weather it's unlikely to overheat without the seal. It's tricky to fit them, you'll need access to top and bottom and reasonable patience. The 'U' shaped edge of the seal has to be pushed on to the edge of the tinware, but in places it'll be pretty tight. Probably easier if it's warmed to soften the rubber first. Have fun!

As an aside, lovely clean engine bay, but odd looking distributor. It appears to have no vacuum advance?

Someone else mentioned that, tell me more I’m not that knowledgable with engines hoping to learn a bit as I know I’ll be tinkering

Take a look I the elećtrial section, a post titled distributor identification. It'll probably answer all your questions better than I would.
