Heater Controls 1980 Air Cooled

Post by simonmarsh »

Hello All,

I have checked through old posts first but can't find anything on the cable connections etc at the engine end. I am after any advice please on the middle lever (shifts between holt and cold air) being "seized". It worked a few months ago but van stood for about 10 weeks due to ignition fault. Could anybody please point me in the right direction of linkages / cables to be checked / lubricated or is it possibly a fault elsewhere (behind dash etc?)

Many thanks

Welcome to the world of Aircooled heating, if it is a hot cold lever then it is likely the problem is at the heater pod, which is a simple flap valve that directs the heat from the heat exchanger to either into the van or outside. The inner cable beyond where it is clamped to the chassis are prone to rust and seize up. Put some WD 40 on the cable and on the heater pod pivot as well. Leave it to soak a while and then try and work the lever.

Thanks both - I believe it's a CU engine

Hello

So the heater controls are pretty simple and basic.
I would suggest you get 2 link repair kits..
and the bellows

Then you will be able to disconnect the control wires from the heat exchangers. make sure the flap valves on the exchangers work well. Drop the spare wheel and find where the control wires pass. Then blow light oil and air through as much of the control wire and sheath as possible. Work the heater control lever gently back and forth, with out forcing, if necessary pulling on the control wire to extend it fully.

If they are really stuck, they will need replacing in the Spring, but you can lock the flap valves open with a bit of wire (Not a zip tie!!) which will give full heat.

I asked whether CU or CT, as the 2 litre twin carb CU engine has feeble heat delivery at the best of times because of the heat exchanger design.

You will have to drop the fuel tank eventually, (hoses, seals and anti rust paint), which will be a good time to go through the heater wire system and inspect/change the main air supply tube over the fuel tank (often collapsed).
