I use a standard petrol engine (DG) gearbox on spec diameter wheels and tyres, on my ADY powered hightop.
Is it wrong to assume that the extra power from the Golf engine could be better managed with a) slightly bigger tyres. Or b) a more suitable gearbox.
I know what a) is but what would the answer to b) be?
Thanks.

Re: AGG gearbox code choice.
Bigger tires will work but only marginally. I have the 5 speed abn gear box and it works really well with the agg. A longer 5th gear would be nice but a return of about 26/28mpg at 70 I’m happy with my brick.

Re: AGG gearbox code choice.
Kev, I ran 5% bigger tyres on mine for a long time.
215/65r16 with a 3H box, it was a neat perfect setup.

I have an AGG with DT code 4 speed and 205 80 14c tyres. Runs at 70 around 3500 rpm handles well.

Re: AGG gearbox code choice.
Thanks for all the replies.
The DT box rpm @ 70 look like the figures I'm after.
Aidan I'm presuming I have the usual code fitted to 1.9 DG. 1986
Its a 4sp.
The code is a bit unreadable on the gearbox.

Re: AGG gearbox code choice.
Just to tidy up this old thread, after saving up and doing a hell of a lot of research I finally fitted my ideal choice
These are 215 /70 x 16 (106)
The percentage increase is subtle but it has made 1st gear much more useful
In fact all the gears now use the AGGs ability to rev out much more suitably.
Another aesthetic value is that they fill the arches.

Re: AGG gearbox code choice.
I have found that playing around with tyre sizes can give nice results, on our t4 I upped to 225 65 15 with 195 15c being the original size.
used to run 255 60 15 on the rear of a 2.1 panel van I had.
I have 225 65 16 on merc steels on the Doka I am gradually doing.
we had a 1.9 1y powered t3 on a DT code box with 205 80 14 tyres. now that did struggle a bit on the hills but on the flat was fine.

WHY T3's.... because they are just so adictive, and having one just aint enough

Re: AGG gearbox code choice.
bigger tyre diameter is the cheapest solution to reduce travel speed rpms. However the look with the mill-wheels is personal preference.
