Re: 1984 conundrum
I spent some time last night looking for an early WBX wiring diagram.... unsuccessfully of course.
As a proper one doesn't seem to be available, how about one of you guys with one that is properly wired (or eventually done) doing a current flow diagram to cover the carb and related connections ?
Even something hand drawn would seem to be a big help for those whose vans have been subject to "improvement" through the years
I'm glad Ads1987 has found this thread - I was about to put the two of you in touch when I saw his post

Mocki’s and a blank for other owners current wiring. Only issue with my van on this arrangement is why one wire is 2,5mm and the other is 0,5mm with a plug end, not socket. Plug shouldn't be a feed?

Re: 1984 conundrum
They're a bit small & blurry but after magnifying them are you sure this is correct ?
My recollection was that the manifold heater had quite a high current draw and looking at the later vans it is that that has the 2.5mm wire (N51 in current track 24)

Re: 1984 conundrum
I am trying to help here (even if it may not appear that way). That said I don't have any experience of early WBX so experience trumps my reading of the wiring diagrams.
It may be helpful to put the VW component references on the diagram, to avoid ambiguity
I can't see the relay wiring mentioned
On the late WBX the thermoswitch acts as the trigger for the J81 relay - the diagram shows the hedgehog wired direct
I have uploaded the page from the late WBX for easy comparison

1984 conundrum
the relay is after the thermo switch, the thermo switch triggers the relay , or what is the point of the relay ???
the power comes from the +12vdc stud in the black box , through the relay to the carb and manifold heaters

Re: 1984 conundrum
I have mine wired similar to Mocki but according to the haynes, the choke is also fed off the same 2,5 wire that feeds the manifold heater and carb body heater.
I had assumed the choke would only need to be operated for as long as the heaters are?
So at this stage the lilac/black fits onto the thermoswitch, from cold this means the preheat relay is activated and the red 2.5mm cable is powered which in turn powers the manifold heater, carb heater and choke. When the thermoswitch reaches temperature it turns off and the relay stops the power to both heaters and the coke.
Hopefully that makes sense and is correct, I just still have mystery cables that i'm going to identify with my multimeter over this week!
If it is correct and once I've actually got it working i'll do diagram/pictures

are you sure.... I just looked in the book, the wiring is not late van wiring, perhaps it is early for this bit.
Does this help ?

Well, I have annotated a wiring diagram and was trying to upload it, but I get the message
"Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached"
I'll E D I T this post when the attachment quota issue has been solved. I reduced the quality down to 36KB, 566 x 768
