Polishing a windscreen?

Post by rollercoaster »

My screen is a bit "sparkly" at night, from oncoming lights,
you know its old and has a degree of fine scratches I guess.
Is it possible to polish these out,
or treat it with some kind of product?
Or will I have to replace it?

Yes, have a search for something called cerium oxide - it's what is used to make & polish lenses.

It takes time and you need to make sure you don't create curves / ripples in the outside surface. I have used it with a mop to get rid of scratch marks from a wiper on a rear window and some mild crazing of a winscreen where it looks like there was n impact, but not enough to shatter the glass. You will need to be patient.

I bought mine as a powder.

Available from stone polishing outlets if you can't find it easily. It takes a matter of days not hours when giving a final polish to pebbles so don't expect immediate results.

.... alternatively, if you have a mop /polisher you can spend a fiver and get the experience for yourself.

If it doesn't work out, then you can still get a new screen, which will get a chip in the first week :D
