2.1i Automatic accelerator free play
I have a VW T25 2.1i automatic, I have some free play when using the accelerator pedal most noticeable when driving in slow traffic. I want to take up this free play but on looking at the manual I can see the throttle cable is also part of the linkeage for the kick down facility. Anyway I am not really fully aware of what I’m doing so could somebody out there advise me about how to do this correctly.

Re: 2.1i Automatic accelerator free play
The whole set up is asking for free play, I have play around the pedal pivot first then if you are not lucky the hole in the linkage where the solid threaded end of the throttle bar from the kick down lever goes through ovals off and notwithstanding any play where the ball and socket attaches to the original carb throttle shaft. And that is without looking at whether there is any play to take up from the kick down lever. Then because of the kick down there is that silly spring over the threaded bar to enable the kick down to exceed normal throttle travel . How much fun is that . So I have decided to repair and re drill the pivot on the throttle pedal first and use a new pivot pin. Next I will clean up and re lube the lever under the pedal which is rather crusty. Then I will remove the ball joint and the extra linkage from the side of the carb and either drill out and bush the hole in the shaft or weld it up and re drill to take the play out there. I have already cleaned up the kickdown mechanism and re lubed . There is very little play in that. THat should do the job . Then it is a matter of adjusting the kickdown correctly then setting the rod to carb length so that the throttle closes completely when warm but with no excessive play. If all is lubed it may well be ok but some throttle springs on these carbs are starting to loose strength and it may be that an additional spring will be needed to pull the linkage back completely to tick over. ( A gentle spring) not a monster. Mine is just about doing the job at present so with a bit of lubing and cleaning you never know!!!

Ps does your gearbox whine slightly as you accelerate through first and second? Bit like a very quiet tube train?

Mine has tube train whine
I replaced all bearings when i rebuilt it and it sound the same
I think its the oil pump making the whine

Mine is way better up hills than my Bay window manual was so no worries here.
I didn't want an automatic but have loved every minute of the silky smooth changes so far.
