Grumpy engine

Post by Freddievan »

Not sure if this is an issue with the fuel system or ignition system. Van sounds like it's slightly missing, grumbles and judders a bit on low revs and is a bit flat and vaguely uneven on acceleration. Once warmed up it races on tick-over. I've had a couple of carb rebuilds including buying a second hand carb and exchanging sections.

Suggestions, comments, advice... anything welcome?

Stumped, eh? I posted a similar issue last year and was flooded with advice to get a full carb overhaul at Bromyard VW... which will be fine when I have a spare £400 to £500 handy :(

When I posted last year the van was stalling on tick over which it isn't now.

Not stumped, the bulb in my crystal ball is out.
It's very hard to diagnose your engine problems from far away.
Missing/grumbling could be anything from bad spark plugs, wrong ignition timing, bust dizzy diaphragm, leaky or missing vaccum pipe, dirty fuel, wrong auto choke settings, badly set up carb, dirty carb, leaky fuel pipes, etc, etc, etc.

as with all diagnostics, start at one point and move methodically through your points of interest, one at a time, testing between.......

i would begin with plugs, leads and rotor and cap, dissy play and timing
then once i was sure sparks were all happening in the right place, move to fuel delivery, both filters , pump and pipes ,
then induction, checking choke working correctly, inlet manifold gaskets and vac pipe air leaks.

If you are still looking at the carburettor, the 'Repair' option at BROMYARD is £295
