Thoughts on epoxy primer
Now that the sun is finally shining and we are back from our spring holiday the time has come to tackle some small rust spots, last done 8-9 years ago the seams were grouted out, sand blasted, treated with 'Jenolite' then what was 'finnegans No1 primer' before the respray, this has held up well but there was a little reaction with the paint finish not being compatible, this showed up after 4 years or so. I will be sanding back the paint topcoat and sand blasting the seams again but would like some feedback on using epoxy primer instead of the 'No1' primer to avoid the incompatibility issue. I would add that the body work is good with only the bottom front panel having been welded.

Re: Thoughts on epoxy primer
I would go with epoxy primer and use two coats of it. Lechler 29107 is good and has a self etching component in it as well..

Do you need to use a full air mask when using that Lechler 2K?

Re: Thoughts on epoxy primer
Apparently not according to the tech and safety sheets it does not have isocyanates in the hardener, I have got high spec mask though and will mix and spray outside.

Re: Thoughts on epoxy primer
Yeah thats one of the reasons I got the lechler stuff. It sands much better than Jotun jotamastic and topcoat paint sticks to it better.

Re: Thoughts on epoxy primer
Well I bought some and received it yesterday.
They didn't include the hardener with it, my fault - I should have checked.
What hardener are you guys using and what mix ratio?

Re: Thoughts on epoxy primer
It'll say on the back of the can label what product to use and what ratios look for a little cup symbol and something like 00 401 4:2:1 which means 4pts paint to 2 parts activator to 1 part thinner if needed.
If you looking for even tougher I've used Glasurit 801-703 CV Epoxy primer over top of an etch primer, it's from the commercial vehicle range and is used for truck chassis so it's tough stuff, not necessarily a Ferrari level finish buts it's plenty thick to protect the metal underneath from scrapes and dings. Colour coat I used the Glasurit 80 series range. Again CV stuff and really tough. None of this is cheap though. Lechler is good for a budget

Re: Thoughts on epoxy primer
Paint people- in following your thread with interest. For a hobbyist with no spray equipment can you guys recommend a non hydroscopic rattle can self etch primer that I can top coat over easily with rattle can?

Re: Thoughts on epoxy primer
Got some primer on in some of the seams and round the fridge vents, it seems to have gone on nicely with the small gun, 1mm nozzle, no thinners> I have also sprayed a bit of spare rustyish sheet metal to see how well it sticks and performs. Lets hope that I am still smiling tomorrow, the worst bit is trying to get clean after grit blasting.

Re: Thoughts on epoxy primer
I have been given a recommendation for this stuff, Upol Raptor
http://www.raptorcoatings.com/uk/en-uk/ ... oxy-primer
Has anyone any experience on this, or views on comparisons to the Lechler, my local factor stocks Upol product ?
