Speedo cable replaced but...

Post by Sleedale »

Last year, on our trip home from Cornwall, we developed a strange and annoying noise which seems to come from somewhere under the passenger footwell. At the same time the speedometer started behaving strangely, so after some research we decided the cable needed replacing. Bought one from brickwerks and it was fitted last week, along with some other bits of work and the MoT which it passed (yippee)
But
The horribly annoying noise is still there, not all the time but enough to be blummin annoying. So I'm going to phone the garage tomorrow and get it down there so he can have a look but thought I'd ask you clever folks, who know all thing T25 if it could be anything else? Or if there is a magic trick to fit the cable properly or even improperly? We are off to Pembrokeshire in a couple of weeks and I'll be loopy if I have to travel with that noise.
It's a sort of clicking/clacking sound, which stops when the brakes are applied, and doesn't do it all the time, but starts, does the sound, wears off, starts again etc etc blummin etc.

It's not the speedo cable is my guess.

Some noises are really hard to find, I had a rattle at 4o mph coming from the dash area / door, was driving me mad for months and on Saturday the penny dropped, it was the A pillar aerial.

if it stops when braking could well be brakes of peerhaps the spalsh guard rusted half off.

Thanks itchyfeet, I've spoken to the garage and he also thinks it's something to do with the brakes, possibly the calliper or pad is loose or something so it's going in on Thursday for a check, can't drive 300 odd miles with that blummin rattle. I've had a rake around as you do but can't see anything obvious, even emptied the glove box, so I'm hoping whatever it is, is obvious and fixable. Quickly! However, it did need a new speedo cable, we've done surprisingly few miles since last year  and now it seems to go faster than it used to

Nice idea but it does the noise with or without human or even the dog sat on the seat, but I'm open to any and all suggestions. It does sound as though it's coming from underneath the van somewhere. Spent the journey from Cornwall last year trying to find it! I'm hoping it's a bit of rusty something dangling about, but I fear it'll be an expensive other reason

Broken grille retaining clip will make it rattle at random speeds. Took me ages to find that one!

It's more of a clacking sort of sound which stops when the brake pedal is depressed even slightly. However, I'll check the grill and other random loose rattling bits and pieces, could take a while...

A loose wheel will do that...
The speedo cable should be cable-tied to one of the spare wheel retaining wires to stop it whipping about.
A fractured brake disk is not unknown, if a rare occurrence.

I wonder also if completely shot upper wish bone bushes could be to blame

It's getting more expensive sounding, can it just be a bit of a flappy brake thing please? :run

Hooray, the annoying clacking noise has been located and fixed. It was the near side front brake pad very slightly loose in the calliper which is slightly worn, so a shim and spring or something has it sorted. The brakes are fine, the calliper is as good as it can be and the brakes, steering etc are all good. So Victor lives to fight another trip away. Hopefully. Every day is a learning day...

That's why you heard the rattle, general fix for noises is to turn the radio up.
