Seam prep

Post by 100leelee »

It sounds like an odd question, but will ask it anyway!
Having now got many seams where new panels have been welded in, there still needs to be flatting back/filling to do before thinking of paint.
Wet and dry is usual, but water will clearly get into the seams, which can't be good. But if I apply sealant now, this will get contaminated when carrying out prep for paint..?
How have others done this?
Thanks

I painted my seams with vactan after fitting new panels. I would seam seal after finishing the sanding? Well if you will be sanding near the seam joints. Not done any wet sanding of filler as managed to flat filler quite well just using the electric sander. Rustoleum painted on and the panel isn't showing any high spots.

Thanks
I always wet and dry after filler primer for the final finish.. painting with vactan is a good idea. Of course I already have that

Thanks

Filler is porous and soaks up moisture, dry sand from start to finish.
Finish filler with 240 grit before primer and dry sand primer with 400 before sealing then paint.
The less moisture the better, the only thing we set flat is top coat prior to final polish.

Hi
Yes, would never wet the filler
Meant to say the primer or the thicker filler primer, before the finish paint..
Presume you don’t want to flat the paint primer with the sealant in?
