What lift on a trolley jack?
I need to get a new trolley jack and wondered what others might recommend. What sort of lift range? Cheers.

Re: What lift on a trolley jack?
The cheap ones from the likes of Aldi, Lidl, etc. do not have enough lift.

Re: What lift on a trolley jack?
These Arcans have the sufficient lift for our vans. The best I've found for quality and price.

Re: What lift on a trolley jack?
SGS Engineering do some really nice jacks for the money. I've currently got their low profile 2ton trolley jack, but was looking at something a little bigger for the van, possibly something like this:

I got one of these recently - its rendered one of my trolley jacks unusable for my mini (old style not MINI) but has raised it up plant for the camper.

I’m with dubworth, SGS and made in the UK. I use this one,
https://www.sgs-engineering.com/garage- ... olley-jack" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Weighs a lot but why it hold you want to carry it. Lifts up to 52cm, and just slips under my Mini (not MINI) too.

Re: What lift on a trolley jack?
Great thread, I desperately need a decent jack and have no idea what to buy.
at the moment I use a small jack and keep raising and lowering onto blocks, until I get it high enough, takes ages and I'm getting too old for it.
up for paying 100 quid any advance on 520mm?, some also go a significant height with no effort, I assume they have a spring which is compressed when you lower.
keep the suggestions coming.

My problem too. I use the original jack to lift the beast then slide axle stands under. I hate using the original screw jack for routine maintenance (or anything else for that matter). Car ramps are always exciting, especially if your on your own.

Re: What lift on a trolley jack?
I must admit that I prefer to use a small 2 tonne bottle jack and a selection of fence post off cuts when jacking up.
When the bus is parked in the barn there is not a lot of room either down one side or the other and the floor is hard packed earth, the wheels of the trolley jack could break through the surface.

Re: What lift on a trolley jack?
I jack and lower onto ramps, never drive up, you can then position one each way so it can't roll off.
Its the faff of going up in small stages with wooden blocks that I want to eliminate.
I use a metal plate under the trolley jack wheels when on the gravel drive although its so hard packed it doesn't really dig in anyway.

Re: What lift on a trolley jack?
what make ramps are they that you are using?,I am after set and most that I have seen are a bit borderline weight wise for the van, most seem to be about 2 tons and I would prefer a bit more 'beef' to them before I go under the van

Standard ramps, dunno the make they are years old., can't see why you would bd worried about 2 tonnes, your tyres are not rated anything like that high.

Re: What lift on a trolley jack?
The thing to remember, you're only putting half the vehicle on ramps usually, with the other axle still on the ground taking it's share of the weight.
For example, I've got a pair of these trusty Halfords ones at home, the site below breaks it down as being rated for 1000kg per stand, at most I'd say my van is about 500kg per corner if you break it down:

Re: What lift on a trolley jack?
Ramps: an essential part of your arsenal and always have wheel chocks too (buy or homemade, mine are oak and the size of a housebrick cut on the diagonal across the broad face)
Jacks: Weber Hydraulik hi-lift 2 ton or seek out an old EPCO (British made, garage quality)
I would say that if you can pick up the trolley jack on your own, its too small.
