exhaust box removal

Post by tonic »

Hi Need info on exhaust box removal on my 1989 dg engine model. I need to remove it so i can re-weld the original weld that has come apart. I have removed the 3 bolts from the flange fitting and the upper retaining brackets. Do i have to remove both lower brackets to withdraw box, or can i remove just 1 and slide it out and down this way. The retaining bolts for the lower brackets are to put it mildly very awkward to get at, do not want to remove anything i don"t have to. Many thanks Tony

once you have undone the straps that run over the box it is possible to withdraw it towards the intermediate pipe and then drop the other end under the bottom mounting and diagonally remove it but it is a bit of a fiddle and not possible if your inter pipe is still on!! There are two bolts holding each of those bottom brackets on if you use a long 13mm ring spanner on the inner end and then a 13mm deep socket with and extension on the other they are not too bad if they come undone. Suggest when putting it back on use 50mm stainless bolts m8 and nice solid brass nuts. A bit of silicone grease and bobs your uncle. Suggest the same bolts and nuts on the flange.

Hi 123 Thanks for info have removed dozens of Beetle & type 2 exhaust in my time ( used to work on these). Just bought this tin top, and have exhaust to do will at least give it a go and save a few bob. Have not removed intermediate pipe as yet, that will be my next job. Thanks again Tony

I thought it slid out both ways ( I could be wrong but it's central so why not?) but you will need to readjust intermediate pipe anyway to get it to seal.

Hi Have removed inter pipe found lots of oil inside removed box for welding some oil also. Has previous owner been doing something wrong or have i got a duff engine. I have come across this before, but cannot remember on what vehicle. It starts fine and idles nicely have not had it on road as i have to get it mot'd. I am not looking forward to any replies, but would appreciate them anyway. I have found this forum very useful so far, just wish i had an Aircooled as i have done lots and lots of these, but as like a lot of people i find they have become way out of my budget. I guess everything is relevent i last worked on Beetles and type 2s up to about 1992, quite some time ago now. I remember restoring a bay westfalia in the early 90s and than selling it for £3000.00 that was about there worth in those days. Anyway all post will be greatfully received. Tony
