Re: Valve cover issues
I have found that the new covers arent a patch on the old VW ones (that have a single hole for a paint hanger and are stamped with VW Audi logos)
They seem to be less than flat on the gasket face and lighter gauge...
They dont work well with the old clips either. Swap both cover and clip together and glue (dirko) the gasket to the cover, leave it for a while for the gasket to compress and seal properly.

Re: Valve cover issues
Ironically the cheap ones from GSF used to be heavy duty VW original parts ... they only ever really rust where the spring clips rub the paint off.

Re: Valve cover issues
And the technique for replacing old for new spring clip without scratch cover is?
Bloody near impossible!!!!!
Should have done this minor task prior to fitting exhaust system. Loads of room then. No leaky covers though.

Cheers Ian Every day is an enjoyable school day
ALSO...
New covers, gaskets with a smear of grease and new spring clips cured oil leak. Suspect it were clips though. They look in poor condition and very corroded.
Next time l'll remember NOT to do this procedure on a heavily cambered public road. Lower side dropped a bit of oil while fumbling around trying line up clip. Great fun
Thanks

Re: Valve cover issues
I have tried cv grease, masking tape, everything. The spring pressure cuts through the lot. Scratches every time.maxstu wrote:And the technique for replacing old for new spring clip without scratch cover is?

VW must have had a special tool for the job.

Re: Valve cover issues
Can you not use a strip of thin plastic such as from a washing up bottle to protect the finish as you slide the clip into position?

So bloomin true! Both covers are leaking again!
Or perhaps l should investigate around area and check pushrod tubes? This all coincides with new gaskets and rockers after recent oil change...mineral 15-40. Same stuff l have used for ten years

Two suitable size screwdrivers with rubber fuel pipe on tips of blades works well

Re: Valve cover issues
Valve covers are still leaking. Cant see oil coming from elsewhere.
lm going to double up the cork gaskets with a smear of grease in between and either side them refit.
Perhaps this might add pressure to new clips and seal covers properly.
Please say so if you foresee issues doing this?
Regards
Stuart
