Any help / thoughts appreciated as this has been driving me mad.
Just had 3rd garage fit 3rd new fuel tank in around 4 years of running less than 1000 miles / year - used mainly during school holidays only.
First 2 tanks i believe were manufactured in far east & bought via JK. new tanks fitted by 2 different garages. First tank gave almost immediate hesitation etc (< 200 miles).
Next garage (VW specialist) claimed it had 'gunk' in it & needed replaced. I queried whether they could clean it out but they said it was not possible/worth effort & were unable to provide info on gunk content.
This tank then encountered same issues - fuel pump straining, hesitation, juddering. Running to halt & restarting fine.
Rev fine, but intermittent power thereafter etc etc. Always worst on a gradient (up & also if turned left or right at same time).
Always worst when low fuel but have experienced same issue with full tank.
Took to another recommended garage (on holiday) and having checked poor gravity flow from tank, they suspected blockage & put air through outlet pipe into tank.
Apparently something popped & after reconnecting, no fuel pump strain evident for 15 miles then back to square one almost immediately.
Tank was removed & inspected/cleaned but nothing found.
I asked for new tank to be fitted (different manufacturer repro from Denmark I believe) & so far so good touch wood (albeit <50 miles done thus far). Fuel lines were renewed & breather etc etc.
All tanks bought were the 48mm fuel injection tank - this last mechanic queried the dept of swirl pot at the intake section as being a bit small.
There seems to be a filter above this pot which if anything gets through could this then form with other particles for potential blockages? Is the filter in there susceptible to deterioration itself?
Just wondered if anyone has encountered these issues?
Off web for a while whilst I continue whats left of hols on hills - fingers crossed.

So at no point has the fuel pump been checked for flow/pressure ?

Ta for reply. Pump Replaced twice with Bosch pump. Different Mechanics twice have removed pipe linking tank to pump and gravity flow variable from tank hence blockage suspected. Now Still getting fuel ok but running rich and haS back fired. Timing being reset this week.

I'd check the fuel pump wiring behind the airfilter. My connections fell apart when pulled. Had same symptoms as you

Expansion tanks, roll-over valves, breathers, balance pipe, charcoal canister, associated valve and vacuum lines all be checked and function correctly?
May help to check entire system while your fault finding?

Checked flow rate at injectors as per Bentley manual and/or FPR?
