Pop Top Questions

Hi,
Was convinced I needed a high top ( 6'3") and occasional 3rd sleeping place needed.... but then saw a very nice Holdsworth Pop Top, rigid sides. My question to you guys is how 'practical' are they in reality, yes I know they are easier to park/drive, but what is the headroom like with the roof down, and I guess there is less storage space available with the roof down.. Like I say, had convinced myself that a high top it had to be, but now not so sure!!

Sounds like you need to get along to a show or club meet, and check out the interiors of these different designs. They each have the pros and cons, so if you're unsure, you really need to take a good look before you make a decision.

True, have seen a few high tops so know exactly what's what with them.. It's the pop top curve ball!!
Not rushing into buying any old thing, its a long term buy, so will def be sure before I buy anything!
Just though it's always good to hear other peoples' experiences with them..

There's no compromises, the holdsworth is marginally quieter than a canvass pop top when it's up.
That is all.
Holdsworths are very well built though.

It's a choice of practicality verses aesthetics.
All year round/all weather camping verses not all year/weather.

I've had both and the high top just about nicks it for me.
Even though pop tops, in my opinion look nicer, drive better in windy conditions and get under most barriers for a bit of stealth camping they require more maintenance, provide less storage until they are up, are colder in winter and susceptible to damage if windy. Whereas high tops, although a bit squeeky bum time when driving in cross winds, are more practical when camping ie no faffing around moving things about or messing around trying to get the top down when the weathers carp etc
Just my opinion mind.

We toured France for 3 weeks the other year, in our petrol Holdsworth pop top. Pros were that many french campsites termed the van as a 'Camping car' whereas (cons) hi tops were classed as motor homes and paid around 4 euros a night extra.

We found that its all about routine really. Have all the stuff to be stored on the floor, park up, pop the roof and simply bung all the stuff on the floor upstairs. Kettle on and outside with a cuppa in under 10 minutes

Im just over 6' myself and had no troubles with the van and the Holdsworth is, as per Kev's post, is well built so worth looking at.

As Kev mentioned; there are the aesthetics to consider of course. I'm not alone in thinking the high tops are a bit; well...ahem fugly

plus you stand a better chance of getting it under cover at home.
