Reverse lights not working- switch OK

Post by slowcoach »

Hi,
My van is an 84 crossover van. Ie some parts late, some early. Early fusebox.

My reverse lights have stopped working (both) since the engine has been out and back in again. Ive bridged the connectors at the gearbox switch which doesnt light them up, so im assuming the switch is still ok. Since both lights are out, im assuming both bulbs have not blown (1 year old LED bulbs). I think the Horn shares the fuse with the reverse lights on an early fusebox (fuse 12), and the horn is fine.

actually while writing this, i wonder if the horn is still getting a power feed from my extra 2 horns, which are wired via an Indian horn box i bought over there (3 modes: musical, city, highway - awesome!). so the factory fuse may be blown, and its just getting its power from the other two (shared power). ill check that! will report back :)
carry on :)

Some of the crossovers had an inline fuse in the engine bay rather than using a fuse in the front fusebox.

It is not actually in the box, just near it.

Mine went the same way, fuse in the black box in the engine bay . Look for a black push together fuse holder . Little glass filament one .8 amp I think.

hmm, so after some more investigating, the black fuse holder is present, and not blown.

ive traced the wires from the black junction box back to the reverse lights, and confirm thats all in order (i can light the bulbs by jumping power from the battery post in the junction box). what i coulndt find is 12v coming into the black fuse holder, so im going to have to get under the van again and trace where the power stops.

soon as im not stuck in work, and theres some daylight left :/

Possibly an issue in the black box over on the back-left looking in engine bay.

If it's a left hand drive someone will have bodged it to run power from right to left. You may have pulled this pointless looking wire whilst the engine was out?

Its a RHD, and im certain its all still there. When i opened up the black junction box, i found the reverse wire was loose (the yellow connector fell off while i was jiggling). Reconnecting didnt resolve it though (?), so next is to bridge the switch again, and find out how far the power gets. ive confirmed both bulbs are working though.

just need another spare hour to investigate really, im sure ill sort it now. ive just had to peck at it, rather than sitting with it until the end. Thanks for all responses :P

HMM RATS.
so getting after into it (under it) again, im stumped after not being able to get any power at the switch on the gearbox. Ive looked at the haynes wiring diagram, and whatever else may be wrong, i should have a solid 12v coming to one side of the spades that attach to the switch.

Does anyone know if the +feed to the switch comes from the junction box in the engine bay, or from the fusebox?
