Whining Gearbox

Post by richie-b »

Just brought a "fully rebuilt" DH gearbox to replace one with sticking 4th to 3rd. Apparently hadn't been fitted since a rebuild at Bristol Transmissions in 2014. Fitted with new clutch kit. Fettled with the linkage and it goes into gear a treat. Nice slick change. Only issue is it has a whine like a jet engine (or a dyson vacuum turbo head) in 2nd. All other gears are fine and there is no roughness or lack of power or any other issue when in 2nd, just the noise. Fresh oil was put in before install. Oh and its a CU air-cooled engine.
Anybody have any thoughts as to what this may be? All ideas appreciated.
Cheers
Richard

I have that as I change down, was advised its nothing to worry about as long as I don't drive it like a drag car! It's actually started to disappear after a couple of oil changes and smooth driving.

Thanks G Dub52. I get it under acceleration only and I can't "feel" any roughness or grinding. I suppose part and parcel of having an old tin box like these is having something to worry about. :D
