Jambo, being tarted up abit

Post by Dazco »

Ive finaly started with the bodywork and patching up thye rusty bits on Jambo(1985 1.9 petrol Autosleeper).

1st off Andrea helped with getting the interior out, she aint gonna thank me for putting this pic on
Image

First sign of the dreaded rust was round the 240 volt hook up.
Image

Followed by the floor on the O/S
Initialy the chipboard just crumbled and i feered the worst.
Image
But in the end there was only a small hole , looks like water had leeked through the windows and had pooled down this side.
Image
After we got all the floor out i was suprised just how good it was

Image

Next came the windows, Yikes.
Image
Image
After getting stuck in at the end of play today i had both N/S windows done and have just started on the rear O/S

Good luck and keep the pics coming!

Didnt do as much this week as i wanted to  .
But did manage to cut the rot out from round the 240 volt box and patch it up.
Image
Then started to cut the rot out of the floor.
Image
This apperas to be the only rot on the floor section, gave it all a thorough going over and both inner cills look fine as do all the cross members and jacking points.
The only other part around here to replace is the O/S outer cill.
Ill be tackling that next week :ok

looking at the picks showing the ns inners , I see a lot of rusty water tracks from the leaking windows, is it good down the bottom and what about ther rear jp inners
use non setting mastic when you fit the inner plastic cover on and youll have the job cracked

Howdo mm, ive traced the water runs down to the bottom and all looks well. looks like it ran forward and collected in the floor area where ive cut it out. the inner sections of the cill are all waxoyled and look very good(should make welding exciting).
My main concern is doing the front panel above the bumper, ive looked at a few sections on the site concerning its replacement so will be tackling that as and when time alows.
ill post pics every week, it will act as a kind of diary for me and keep me on track.
Cheers Daz

Hey up Daz,

Having finally completed our restoration, so speaking from the bright and shiny end of what your just starting, I wish you all the very best of luck... and bucket loads of patience. I dont have the skills for the welding lark and had to hand ours over to an expert however I visited him weekly and I see from your pics that a lot of the rot around the windows and flooring is the same state that ours was in... hats off to you my friend for tackling it yourself.

Take plenty of pics too - I enjoy following these things... its great to look back on and were putting a photoalbum together to keep with the van when (if) we come to sell it.

The best pic about the pics is the mug of tea sat by the drivers seat in one of them... that stuff kept me going I can tell ya.

Have fun!

Ive dropped the external water tank off and the floor and inner cill looks fine, just need to scrape some old under seal off then re paint. More pics at the weekend;-). Any how must get some work done. Dont get paid for sitting on my ass :-)

Braved the snow this morning to head over to Glossop to get the panels from Schofields  , |Snake pass was closed so had to make a detour over the Strines and up to the woodhead pass  . was well worth it, there was a good 3" of snow down but the road was open. Anyhow got home and set to work takling the front panel :( .
After a bit of poking around.
Image
Yikes thigs were looking worse than i first imagined, so time for the BIG grinder.
Image
After cutting a bit out i found that the rot had spread into the main Beam itself and had eaten through. That crappy cardboard air deflector looks like it had been causing the water to pool between it and the steel and as a result had rusted through in a few places. So instead of just letting in the repair panel i had to start cutting and welding the inner bumper bit.Luckily i had some much thicker steel, courtesy of a company i used to work for
Image
Had to cut a fair old section out but would make welding the new bit in a bit easier.
Image
Made the inner patch out of 2 pieces . thought it would make it a bit easier as theres a funny little indentation in the centre for the spare wheel retaining bolt thingymajig.
Not the best weld in the worl but better than rust.
Image.

So tomoro ill be finishing off the front end and hopefully start tackling the O/S outer silll
