1.6 diesel engine

1.6 diesel engine
I have just bought a 1.6 diesel engine and 5 speed gearbox with the intention of replacing a 1.9 watercooled engine presently fitted, will the four speed gear linkage work the 5 speed box and also can anyone tell me approx mpg i can expect from the diesel engine.

the linkages are different for 4-speed and 5-speed. People seem to report around 35-40 mpg for the 1.6 n/a - a few reports here I think:

I would prepare yourself for some quite leisurely drives!
