Sold my mini, at last! Now I know how much I can spend (it’s never enough is it?) I can place some orders!! Working next week but got the week after off at home :D

Oooh a complete new B post, and some other bits of new metal, some with VW original stickers.

Is that going to need a fair bit of strengthening when you remove the old one ?

Strengthen the b post? Argh, hope not! Got that rather than just the lower bit because it’s knacked higher up, not just at the bottom.

But I’ll use as little of it as I have too.

As for the inner part of the b post, I think that’s only rusted at the base so I’ll rebuild that (and the j.p. reinforcement) with bits of sheet once I’ve got the inner sill on, and can see how the outer b post meets it. Sounds simple, eh?

The bit with the label is the strengthening piece above the rear jp. Comes down vertically to the edge of the inner sill, has a funny curve in it. Here’s the top part behind the bolster.

Higher up? Don’t know yet... Trying to resist carving up the whole van. I do know that the rear arch is fubar, and the rear corner below the vent too, but I didn’t need to carve it up to see that - just had to put my hand through the holes...

I was just thinking if you are going to replace the whole B post then will the body flex when it is removed, will you have to temporarily brace it ?

That is a cheery thought! The sill (inner) will be in place, maybe the outer too although I guess not as that butts onto the B. As I say I’m only replacing what I need to, so will likely be able to leave the top of the B in place, and I will hopefully get to cut round the door latch etc too (haven’t taken back the paint there yet but there’s no sign of rust or filler) so that will leave continuity to the front arch/step/A-post. My drivers seat box is still intact too. I only recall metalmick8y putting a strengthening piece in to hold the A-post in place when the step and arch were removed, nowhere else.

I thought the wheelarch / step would be insignificant to strength and the arches are thin stuff, and largely constructed of rust.

If you are not using the whole B post then I would be less concerned about the body flexing, but as the outer sill is no longer there then a lot of strength will be missing

Better to highlight doubt now than be faced bith a bendy van when you have been throwing the grinder around :) , I think

Maybe I should reconstruct the inner part of the B post before replacing part of the outer skin of the b post. Thinking about it, (as I write this) it’s obvious (now it is anyway) that I’ll have to do that, as there’s no access to the B inner once I replace the skin. And the B outer is just a skin, pretty thin metal compared to the B inner.

Worry not...
