I recognise the natural thing would be to build up each bank step by step, but why not build up one side completely and then turn the engine over. The heads do the job then. I suppose having an engine stand makes this approach easier.
quicker and easier to do it in stages fit all the pistons at one go fit heads in one go otherwise you have to get tools out and put them away twice.
imagine dropping a clip.inside with the head on the other side and not be able to get it out, have to take the head off again.

I fitted my speedisleeve and 8 new studs.
Then made a couple of barrel retainers cos I know I'm going to need them.
how do you know how long to leave the studs?
its important to get them right or you will have too much or two little thread to fit the nuts
How did you get on with the speedi sleeve? I find them akward to fit.

What's the verdict on the second oil pressure sensor, leave as is, enhance the filling or drill & tap for pressure switch ?

I found that out today, fitted the water seals to the casing and did a trial fit of the heads to see how much stud stuck out.
seating the studs right down left them too short so I had to adjust them.
Speedisleeve was awkward right enough ut ok in the end.

I suspect a previous owner or bodger has stripped the thread for the pressure switch.
feeling and poking down the oilways it feels like the magic metal isn't protruding into the oilways so I think I'll leave it be.
Alternatively I could drill and tap for something like this M12x1.25 to M10x1 adapter.
and then fit the original black switch.

Re: Not a restoration.
It would be nice to fit a pressure guage sender in there but they're quite bulky and I don't think there's room.

Re: Not a restoration.
I can measure how much stud thread is showing on my cases / total stud length if that would help
On the oil pressure switch I think I would want to take advantage of the early warning nature of the system. May I suggest a Time Sert insert nut https://eshop.wurth.co.uk/Insert-nut-TI ... FRBHVls8aM. This will need something like a 12mm thread cutting in the block, so similar to the item you showed, but will go in flush.
Of course, having an oil gauge giving live feedback is even better, take a look at itchythreads for where he picked up the feed for an electrical gauge.

Re: Not a restoration.
oil pressute sender should be in the low pressure switch location with remote T piece to compare with VW stats.
The buzzer is worth having imo.

Re: Not a restoration.
Thanks for stud lengths. That'll help a lot.
I had a plan to drill and tap the presumably stripped m10x1 hole out to 1/4NPT and fit a 90 degree adapter to a hose to a remote sender.
But if the switch has an adapter as standard then it's the adapter thread that's stripped. Bugger!!
That adapter looks like quite a big thread so I'd have to go even bigger with my adapter or thread insert.

Re: Not a restoration.
cheers for the part number, that link doesn't get past my works computer security for some reason, I'll go search on the part number.
E D I T- unfortunately that part is a thread insert for the engine mount hole. m10X18mm long.
This shows a 14.2mm bung (item 10) in the pressure switch poition.
https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/typ+ ... /101-3010/
M16 would need a 14.7mm tapping drill. hmmm......
