I screwed the cover onto the pump and the pinions wouldn't turn.
So I photocopied the elring gasket onto 0.1mm paper and cut it out with the wife's nail scissors.
Pinions now turn with barely perceptible end float.
I assume you need some end float to allow a film of oil between the pinions and the cover to prevent cover wear. But not so much that you get oil leaking past. How thick is an oil molecule? Hahaha...

personly I'd take a smidge off the gears on wet and dry and lose the gasket, do driven gear first then free gear
don't think you need any endfloat as long as it turns there must be a smidge.

My driven gear was moving freely on it's own so a quick rub of the free gear on the wet and dry/mirror got it moving.

The postie didn't bring my sealants today so that's delaying things. :evil:
They were supposedly dispatched on the monday.

you can dry assemble the case as a practice run and to check it all looks good and turns as it should.
are the heads finished?
didn't you buy a speedisleeve?
spigot bearing perhaps

usually something else to do like cleaning and painting the engine bay tinware, exhaust, carb etc so its all ready.

Speedisleeve is cut and ready, waiting for dirko-ht, although I guess Rocol oilseal would do there.
Cases have been dry fitted,
Heads are ready,
spigot bearing is in,
engine bay does need paint but it's drizzling and the midgies are out*. :lol:
Rocker covers are cleaned and painted.

Grass needs cut but see * above.
Dog wouldn't mind ANOTHER walk but see * above. :lol: :lol:

Sounds almost like a Top Gear challenge, oh wait, didn't they do that already in a Panamera :rollin

It's so often the small stuff that screws up project timing.

My hylomar af arrived in 24 hrs. Donno what's taking the rest so long. Maybe lost or maybe held up somwhere.
I fitted my speedisleeve and 8 new studs.
Then made a couple of barrel retainers cos I know I'm going to need them.

This will probably appear to be a daft question, but why the need for barrel retainers ?

I recognise the natural thing would be to build up each bank step by step, but why not build up one side completely and then turn the engine over. The heads do the job then. I suppose having an engine stand makes this approach easier.

Aye, Lets me put barrells and pistons in on both sides and then crank it over to check all is well.
I could build up one side fully right enough but it seemed logical to do it in a balanced way.
Wish I had an engine stand but wasn't going to buy one for a one off job.
I hope I don't have to make a habit of engine re-building. :rofl

Oh how I miss living in the Highlands!!!

The other day my angle grinder packed up, I drive 5 mins at 7:30pm and got a new one! (Don’t worry, the old one is going back to Lidl)(and the new one didn’t come from Lidl - the old one did because I lived in Thurso :cry: )

yeah, you know how it is Roger.
Everything has to come by post and couriers take forever.
Must be nice to be able to just nip out and pick up a new grinder, and have a choice in which one to get, and not pay over the odds for it.

And if it rains, the rain is vertical, and haven’t seen a midge, and when people say it’s cold I look at them weirdly, ditto windy, and there are trees that are tall and bushy with leaves still on them, and I haven’t been waking up at 2:30am because it’s light outside and I forgot to pull down the blackout blind, and carriage charges are reasonable or FREE...or even just possible (ie none of that “No we don’t deliver to Thurso, mainland only!”. “Thurso IS on the mainland!!”. “Well it says here that it’s not, so it can’t be. Sorry...”)

Need I go on?

There is traffic as the A9 goes past the house (30mph built up section) but there’s also a bus stop and a cycle lane, and a wee train goes past every half hour, but I quite like that. I guess I might not have liked being next to the railway when Longannet was open though, 24 trucks of 100 tons each or so on every train...

I used to holiday every year on the coast near Ayr and don't remember being plagued by midges. Have they got worse?
